OUR PAVING SERVICES
Comprehensive Paving Solutions for Homes and Businesses
A1 Plumbing & Construction provides durable, professionally finished paving for a wide range of residential and commercial applications. We work with quality materials suited to the coastal and inland conditions of the Overberg and Garden Route regions. From initial site assessment through to final sealing, every stage of the paving process is executed with precision and care. Our work is visible at properties across Still Bay and the surrounding towns, and our references are always contactable.
Driveway Paving
A well-paved driveway adds immediate kerb appeal and long-term value to any property. A1 installs driveways using interlocking brick pavers, concrete slabs, and cobblestone units that withstand vehicle traffic, coastal weather, and heavy use. We ensure correct gradient and drainage so that rainwater is managed effectively and the surface remains stable over time. Every driveway is finished with neat edging and consistent jointing for a clean, professional result.
Correct gradient and drainage on every installation.
Pathway and Garden Paving
Garden pathways and pedestrian walkways require precise levelling and a finish that complements the surrounding landscaping. We install both formal straight-line pathways and curved informal paths using materials chosen to suit the property style. Whether the brief calls for dressed sandstone, clay brick, or concrete pavers, we ensure a stable, level surface that ages well in the coastal conditions of the Overberg region.
Stable, level surfaces suited to coastal landscaping.
Patio and Outdoor Entertainment Paving
Outdoor living is central to the Still Bay lifestyle. A1 designs and installs paved patios and entertainment areas that are level, well-drained, and built to handle outdoor furniture, braai areas, and foot traffic year-round. We assist clients in selecting the right paving material for their aesthetic preference, whether that is slate-look porcelain, exposed aggregate, or traditional clay brick, and we ensure the surface sits correctly relative to the house floor level to prevent moisture ingress.
Built for the Stilbaai outdoor lifestyle.
Parking Area Paving
Residential guest parking and multi-vehicle carport aprons require a surface that holds up under consistent weight and turning movements. A1 prepares a compacted sub-base, installs a correctly dimensioned base layer, and lays heavy-duty pavers with tight jointing to prevent movement. For larger parking areas we include fall lines and drainage channels to manage surface water runoff effectively.
Heavy-duty base and drainage design included.
Commercial Yard Paving
Commercial yards, loading areas, and forecourts are subject to heavy vehicle loads and frequent use. A1 Plumbing & Construction has the experience and equipment to complete commercial paving projects efficiently and to a standard that meets commercial property requirements. We work around operational schedules to minimise disruption and deliver a surface that performs reliably across the service areas of Still Bay, Riversdale, Albertinia, and Heidelberg.

OUR PAVING PROCESS
How We Deliver a Durable, Professional Paving Result
Every paving project completed by A1 Plumbing & Construction follows a structured, methodical process. This ensures that the finished surface is stable, well-drained, correctly graded, and built to last in the coastal and inland conditions of the Garden Route and Overberg regions. Andre van Staden oversees every step personally, from the initial site visit through to the final sealing and inspection.
01
Site Assessment and Preparation
Before any material is laid, we assess the site to understand the soil conditions, existing drainage patterns, gradient requirements, and the intended load on the surface. Any vegetation, existing structures, or unstable fill material are removed and the sub-grade is shaped and compacted to the required profile.
02
Sub-Base and Base Layer Construction
A correctly constructed sub-base is the foundation of any long-lasting paving. We excavate to the required depth, compact the sub-grade, and install a crusher-run or gravel base layer to the specified thickness. For driveways and commercial areas, this base is compacted in layers to achieve the required bearing capacity and to prevent future settlement.
03
Edge Restraint and Bedding Layer
Edge restraints are installed before the bedding layer and paving units are placed. These restraints define the boundary of the paved area and prevent lateral movement of the pavers over time. A compacted bedding layer of coarse sand is then screeded to an even thickness across the prepared base, providing the level platform onto which the pavers are set.
04
Paver Installation and Levelling
Pavers are laid to the agreed pattern and design, cut precisely at edges and around obstacles using appropriate cutting equipment. Throughout the installation we check levels continuously to ensure the surface achieves the correct fall toward drainage points. This stage is where the quality of workmanship is most visible, and it is where Andre's hands-on involvement makes the greatest difference.
05
Jointing, Compaction, and Sealing
Once all pavers are laid and levelled, kiln-dried jointing sand is spread across the surface and worked into the joints by compaction with a plate compactor. This locks the pavers together and prevents weed growth in the joints. Where specified, a sealer is applied to enhance the colour of the paving material and to provide additional protection against oil staining, weed germination, and surface abrasion.
A1 Plumbing & Construction brings this disciplined, step-by-step approach to every paving project across Still Bay, Jongensfontein, Riversdale, Albertinia, Heidelberg, and the broader Garden Route region. No shortcuts. No subcontractors. The owner on every job.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
paving Questions Answered
If you are considering a paving project and want to understand more about materials, durability, and what to expect from the process, the answers below cover the most common questions clients ask A1 Plumbing & Construction before starting their project. For anything not covered here, contact Andre directly and he will be happy to advise.
What paving materials do you use?
A1 Plumbing & Construction works with a range of materials suited to the Overberg and Garden Route climate and aesthetic. Our most commonly used options include clay brick pavers, concrete interlocking block pavers, cobblestone, sandstone, exposed aggregate concrete, and porcelain outdoor tiles. The right material for your project depends on its intended use, the expected traffic load, your drainage requirements, and your budget. During the initial consultation, Andre will walk through the options with you and make a recommendation based on your specific situation. We source quality materials from reputable suppliers to ensure consistent colour, durability, and finish.
How long does paving last?
When properly installed on a correctly prepared base, quality paving can last 20 to 30 years or longer with minimal maintenance. The lifespan depends on the material chosen, the quality of the sub-base and bedding preparation, the traffic load the surface carries, and how well the surface is maintained over time. A1 Plumbing & Construction constructs every paving project to the correct specifications from the ground up, which means our work holds up far better over time than paving laid on an inadequate base. We provide maintenance guidance after project completion so clients know how to care for their investment.
Do you pave both residential and commercial properties?
Yes. A1 Plumbing & Construction handles both residential and commercial paving projects. On the residential side, we install driveways, garden pathways, patios, and pool surrounds. On the commercial side, we pave parking areas, loading yards, forecourts, and pathways at commercial, retail, and light industrial properties. The construction standards and material specifications differ between the two, particularly in terms of base thickness and paver strength class, and A1 designs each project to the appropriate specification. We operate across Still Bay, Riversdale, Albertinia, Heidelberg, and all areas within our 100 km service radius.
How do I maintain my paving?
Paving is a relatively low-maintenance surface but a few regular steps keep it looking its best. Sweep the surface regularly to remove leaf litter, sand, and debris that can work into the joints and promote weed growth. Re-sand the joints whenever they become noticeably depleted, as tight jointing is the primary defence against weed growth and paver movement. Attend to any cracked or sunken pavers promptly before they cause a trip hazard or allow water to undermine the base. If your paving was sealed at installation, a re-seal every three to five years helps maintain colour and surface protection. A1 Plumbing & Construction is available for paving maintenance, re-sanding, and minor repairs across our full service area.
